Sioux Sciacca
Senior Practice Manager

1991 graduate of Santa Fe Zoo Program, specializing in herpetology. During her time in Gainesville, Florida, Ms. Sciacca carried permits to own and show her collection of venomous reptiles, snakes, lizards and birds. Her collection varied in species and included over 60 animals.  She was also part of a reptile removal service that safely removed and transported indigenous species of Florida, from residences.

In the years since “zoo school”, Sioux has been in the veterinary field since 1993 and has made Garden City Park Animal Hospital her home for the last 20 years, and is now leading the team at Mineola Animal Hospital since January 2017.

Dr. David Alan Kolins

graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Association of Avian Veterinarians, Association of Reptile Amphibian Veterinarians, Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, Association of Wildlife Veterinarians, New York State Veterinary Association and the Long Island Medical Association. He has a special interest in Exotic Animals, and Chemotherapy.

Dr. Joseph Deme

graduated from the University of Veterinary Sciences at Budapest, Hungary in 1988. He regularly attends many local, monthly continuing education courses, as well as regional, annual continuing education courses. Dr Deme is a member of the AVMA and completed one year of clinical experience at Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He is now one of our staff Veterinarians at the Mineola Animal Hospital, which opened in 2008.


Dr. Gary Dattner

graduated from Cornell University in 1989. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, New York State Veterinary Medicine Association, Long Island Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Dr. Dattner has completed continuing education courses and regularly attends the North American Veterinary Conference. He has a special interest in Bio Stem Cell Therapy and Orthopedics.

kolins Dr. Mara DiGrazia

graduated from Cornell University in 1996. She completed a small animal medicine and surgical internship at Oradell AnimalHospital in 1997. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, New York State Veterinary Medical Association, and Long Island Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. DiGrazia has special interests in veterinary ultrasound and small animal ophthalmology. She was recently credited for supplying all Nassau County Fire Departments with animal oxygen masks through HELP Animals, Inc.

Renee Rufa

has worked at Mineola Animal Hospital for 12 years. Her interest in working with animals began when she brought her own cat in to MAH to be neutered. Renee loves all animals but has a special connection to cats. At home, she has four cats: Dylan, Max, Emma and Riley.


Pam Carollo

has a love of animals going back longer than she can remember!  Together with her husband, they currently share their lives with Katie Mary, a 14.5 year old lab/pitbull mix, bringing them much joy. After a long career in technical services, and volunteer work with many animal rescue groups, it became apparent where her new path would lead. She is happy to have been working in veterinary medicine since 2006 and is finally home!

Betty Fazio

has been a a customer service rep for the Mineola Animal Hospital for about 10 years. She is a people person and truly enjoys all the clients and their pets. Over the years Betty has had many pets herself and loves every aspect of animal medicine.  Betty welcomes you to “Come in and say hello!”

Mairead Falls

joined the team in 2014 in the kennel and is now in customer service. She currently has a German Shepard named Chief, who gets along famously with his “fur-less” brother, Liam.
She loves seeing the variety of animals and pets that come in to the office. “Working at the animal hospital has been a rewarding experience. I look forward to meeting you and your furbaby”.

Joanna Hinks

began her career at our hospitals in 2005 at the New Hyde Park Animal Hospital, joining the Mineola Animal Hospital team in 2017.  When not at work she spends her time with husband Stephen Hinks, employee at New Hyde Park Animal Hospital and their 15 month old daughter.  She also has a Beagle and 4 cats, 2 of which are special needs kitties. “I have always had a passion for working with animals and hope to do so for a long, long time”.

Nicole Helfer

Nicole Helfer is a seasoned technician of 14 years, and our head technician; who has been with the Mineola Animal Hospital for 10+ years. She joined the veterinary industry in 2003 and immediately knew she wanted to pursue a career in animal medicine and business. Her professional interests include emergency medicine, dentistry, bandaging and keeping inpatient/hospitalized patients happy and comfortable during their stay with us. Don’t let Nicole’s easy-going nature fool you, for she is a dedicated professional who will treat your pets as if they were her own!

Passion is the only way to describe her interest in helping your non-human family members and she ensures each patient is treated properly, while providing much needed care.  Nicole is the proud owner of two very loved dogs, Tinsley & Penelope, and adorable cats, Weezy & Little.  Though working with furry friends is what she does best, in her spare time, she loves anything involving the outdoors and water sports/activities.

Jaclyn Bonomo Avellino, LVT

Known as “JB” in the field, Jackie received her BA from Adelphi University in journalism and business, followed by her LVT license from SCCC. She has been with our hospitals for 3 years before joining us at Mineola Animal Hospital in 2017. JB loves nothing more than spending time with her brigade of animals which include 2 dogs, 2 cats and her horse, Wheezy.

Chelsey Kim

has been on the team since 2013 and is Dr. Deme’s assistant. She graduated Hostra University with a BA in Psychology and is pursuing an MS in animal Behavior and Conservation. On her time off she likes to take her 3 dogs to the park (all rescues) and taking them to the local senior center to spread some puppy love!


Giovanna Paredes

is known to many as Gia, attended St. John’s University, where she received a Bachelor’s in Science with a concentration in Biology in 2008 – and has been a core member of the Mineola Animal Hospital ever since! Gia possesses the personal qualities – empathy, love of learning and its application, and kindness – that are needed to provide outstanding veterinary care. She has had the privilege of working with virtually all types of creatures and her ambition in this field continues to grow each day towards being an advocate for your pets. Her professional interests include exotics, pediatrics, animal rehabilitation, and animal welfare. Giovanna hosts and fundraises for our annual Pictures with Santa event, where 100% of the proceeds are donated to a different organization in need every year! When she’s not working hard to put her cats through college, (Chad, Webbs, Ickis & Oblina), Gia enjoys watching TV, traveling, and broadening her organizational skills.

John Calvao

came to Mineola in 2010 after working at LIVS. He has worked his way through the ranks from kennel, to assistant and is now our resident Kennel Manager. John enjoys all aspects of animal welfare from rehabilitation to rescue. In his free time, he enjoys music and traveling.


John Mouta

started as an intern shadowing Dr. Kolins and officially joined  the Mineola family June 2016. He has come a long way from intern to assistant and kennel worker. John’s favorite things are Starbucks, family and Sky, his Pomsky. As a resident of Mineola Township, John is proud to work for the community and help in animal rehab and rescue.

Matt Stephens

Photo coming soon; working hard at school and part time at the animal hospital. Matt is pursuing his BA in English Education. He has been part of the Mineola Family since 2015 after working with the NYC ASPCA and North Shore Animal League.
